We live in an extraordinary place - the Waikato Region. From the mountains to the sea following the longest river in Aoteoroa/New Zealand, coast to coast, lakes and forests, farms and industry, city and towns, our region is the most diversified in the country. Managing the many, many resources and creating a sustainable environment for now and into the future is the job of our regional council - Environment Waikato.
Our environment is under serious threat!
- Poor soil quality caused by the overuse of fertilisers and poor management of stock.
- Poor water quality in many of our streams, lakes and rivers.
- Poor air quality in some of our towns causing ill health.
- Coastal erosion and poor harbour health through bad landuse decisions.
- Endangered animals and plants through introduced pests.
- Danger to our dairy industry through Bovine TB spread by introduced pests.
- Depletion of natural resources through inefficient energy decisions.
- Urban sprawl and poor urban design creating environmental pressures on our communities.
- Poor wetland management through wholesale drainage and run off into our shallow lakes and streams.
- Too much dependence on the automobile and heavy road transport
AND THE BIGGEST THREAT - ELECTING PEOPLE WHO JUST DON'T CARE - PEOPLE WHO THINK BY SAVING A FEW DOLLARS OFF THE RATES BILL AND CUTTING ESSENTIAL WORK IS CHOOSING THE RIGHT FUTURE FOR OUR REGION AND OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN!!
I have been a regional councillor for fifteen years and have chaired various committees including the Policy and Strategy and Environment committes. I have the experience, commitment and common sense needed to work for my community's future through sound environmental management acknowledging as a ratepayer the need for economic sustainability.
This is why I am standing again in this years local body elections and asking for your vote.
